Improving BME Engagement and Participation in Rural Community Life – the final report on consultation with BME populations in the south west carried out by the Olive Tree Association on behalf of SWAN. The OTA was asked to carry out research to identify measures that could be taken to improve BME engagement and participation in rural community life, and to take some account within the research of rural community needs in relation to migrant worker communities. A meeting involving Social Inclusion Workers from the south west RCCs will be held on 5 June to discuss the report’s findings and possible courses of action. (added 29 May 2007)
Contemporary Slavery in the UK This report published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation looks at the existence of slavery in the UK today. It reviews the different forms modern slavery takes, such as traffi cking of women and children for sexual or domestic labour, forced labour or debt bondage. (added 10 September 2007)
Migrant Workers in West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and the Humber published by the LSC in Yorkshire and Humberside. Of particular interest in the Report is Section 6.3 on page 66, in which the need to address language issues is asserted as the most important concern for improving the lives of Migrant Workers. In most cases the immediate need is for functional conversational English rather than literary or academic skills. (added 13 November 2007)
Conference on Child Slavery November 2008 An international conference is to be held on all aspects of child slavery at the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE), University of Hull, in November 2008. Following the highly successful conferences on Modern Slavery (November 2006), and Unfinished Business (May 2007), WISE is now organising a conference, in conjunction with partner organisations, to examine all aspects of child slavery worldwide, including bonded labour, trafficking, domestic servitude and child labour more generally. This is a first call for expressions of interest in attending and in giving workshop papers. (added 19 November 2007)
